The Arabic language has 28 alphabets and each alphabet has its own distinct number, which is its numerical value. From these numerical values number of calculations can be made, which are the most accurate that any Astro – Science can boast of and can be used in various fields with innumerable applications. This numerological calculation is called Abjad.
It is called Hisaab al-Jumal. Some also call it Ilm-e-Jafr, but there is a difference in the two. Ilm-e-Jafr is the science of foretelling the future events, which were used extensively between 8th-17th centuries in the Arab World. Abjad is the method of calculating about what has already taken place or the current events and about the people. We mainly deal with Abjad as we believe that apart from God no one else can foresee the future accurately and refrain from predictions due to religious constraints.
This method of calculation is older than the revelation of the Qoran. It was earlier used by the Hebrews which they called it as Gematria, part of the Kabbalistic numerology. Earlier it was also used by the Babylonians, Nabataenians, Chaldeans, Thamuds, Sabaians, Egyptians and the Indians. Abjad Science, which is the off shoot of the above, mainly Gematria, is the last perfected Numerological Science. Its perfection commenced at Madinah(under Jafar al Sadiq, the 6th Imam) and found its final destination at Baghdad, the highest seat of learning in those days. This numerical calculation has been used for various purposes by the early Muslims, especially for calculating marriage compatibility, death, battle dates, buildings, etc. With time the science faded away, but has been recently revived by us. This is the science that created sensation between 12-17th centuries in Europe and laid the foundation of the great Renaissance and which eventually gave us this Modern Civilisation.
The first known person to have practiced these sciences or rightfully be called the father of Astro-Sciences was Prophet Enoch (5500-5000 BC). In Islam he is called Prophet Idris. He was the son of Jared and the father of Methusaleh. He was the 7th descendent of Prophet Adam. He practiced the sciences of astronomy, astrology and numerology. He is known to be the father of Arithmetic. He gave us the Hebrew script with numbers against each alphabet. He lived for 365 years. He gave us a numerological solution in which an answer was derived from the question itself. Numbers were given to each alphabet in the question and then added up two ways. The last digit that was derived had a particular answer. This art still continues and has reasonable results.
THE ORIGIN OF ARABIC ALPHABETS
The Nabataeans, who settled in Petra, Jordan, in the 6th-5th centuries BC, spoke a form of Aramaic Arabic, to which they attributed alphabets. With time those alphabets were amended and in the 7th century a few were added to make them 28 in number. The first recorded Arabic text that was written was in AD 512. The Arab grammarians in the 6th century re-organised the alphabets so as to teach and perfect the language, gave it the modern look, as we see them today. By the time the Qoran was written it was at its best.
The Qoranic is the Classical Arabic and differs from the Modern Arabic in writing. There are more than 220 million people who are Arabic speaking from more than 30 countries. Most of these countries have their own dialect or colloquial spoken Arabic.
THE ABJAD SCIENCE
To study for Abjad these 28 alphabets were given numerical values from 1,2,3……. to 9, then 10,20,30…….. to 90, then 100,200,300………to 1000. The first alphabet being Alif(1) and the last being Gayn(1000). These were then divided for convenience into eight words – Abjad, Hawwaz, Hutti, Kaleman, Sa’faz, Karshat, Thakh’az, Duz’agh. The science gets its name from the first word Abjad.

When we calculate the name of a person we omit the zeros and we keep adding up the digits till we derive at a single digit which becomes the name number of the person. For further studies these 28 alphabets were further divided into 7 pairs and each pair had four alphabets. They were divided in the same Abjad sequence. These were then given elemental values. In Abjad alphabets were divided into 4 Elements – Fire, Air, Water and Earth. Each Element had 7 alphabets. They were then also related to the planets and the Zodiacal Signs. See the example below -

When keeping the names of the new born or change of names of any person these elements help in giving a perfect name. Marriage combinations that have bad names or some elements are missing in their names have a rough time in life. Hence, marriage combinations are corrected not only with the perfect name combination, but also the correct elemental values, which are of paramount importance in this field. It is very obvious that without figures / numbers human beings or life is meaningless. The progress that we have achieved so far was because of these numbers. Even one of the 99 names of God means –‘One who records or numbers things,’ as mentioned in the book – Pillars of Islam And Iman. This book was published in Qatar, Arabian Gulf, and is written by Mr. Tariq Mustafa Abbara.
What was the base of these 9 numbers?
These numbers are directly related to the 9 astrological planets. We know that these 9 numbers are synonymous to the planets that are so very important in our life. Hence, if we take out these numbers from our life we are left with nothing. In fact everything in this world depends totally on these numbers. These planets have chemicals which all the creatures receive as rays. How much relevance these chemicals have in our lives? If we know this we shall have an insight to the mysteries of this creation.
There is a Saying of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) that – “Give your child a good name.”
Name is a word and word is a number. Just like –
Allah’s number is 3
God’s number is 3
Ishwar’s number is 3
Bhagwan’s number is 3
Krishn number is 3
Ram Chander number is 3
Mohammad’s number is 2
Isa (Jesus) number is 6
Similarly, when we calculated the numbers of the other names we came across numbers from 1 to 9. Some names were1, the others were 2, 3, and so on. The numbers became the base of that word or name. Hence, man’s existence depends on two things –
1. Word (name) / its number, and
2. Chemicals.
All creatures, including jinns have certain chemicals in them, which develop their characteristics, their future, and their illnesses too. The logic behind this is that every number is governed by a certain planet, and each planet possesses different chemical combinations, which influence the chemical configuration of individuals, who absorb chemical rays from their respective planets, mainly as per their names and dates of birth. When we found out the relevance of the numbers we derived that No.1 denotes the sun. So the person with No.1 would have the rays of the sun that would develop that person’s characteristics, such as arrogance, determination and of course majority of them being successful in all the fields. When we came across businessmen we found out many of them were No.1, the same was in the sports field. Even top leaders and people in top positions had this number.
Similarly, we found out the characteristics of all other numbers from 2 to 9. Our experience in this field revealed that all the successful people in this world were from either of these numbers – 1, 3, & 9. The middle range of numbers was 2, 4, & 7, but if these numbers got the support of the above three numbers, respectively, they too were very successful. The bad numbers were 5, 6, & 8. These are the people who were full of problems or were unsuccessful. However, these number names were highly successful in business and glamour world. This signified the importance of what our Prophet had said – “Give your child a good name.” Good name does not necessarily means – names with good meanings, but more importantly having names that ensured a good and a prosperous future.
However, it is important to note here that some of the people with good numbers like 1, 3, & 9 were also seen in problems. Why and how did this happen? In the words of Mr. Khwaja Hasan Nizami, a renowned Islamic Scholar and translator of the Holy Quran –
“Bad marriage combinations can ruin the couples for life.”
